Think about it this way: Would you start building a facility without first asking for input from the people who will use it? Or, without engaging an architect to create plans?

Starting a capital campaign without proper planning is not a wise move…and it is the first step to raising less! Planning on the front end creates a significant return on investment.

There is a big difference between what you need to raise…and what your donors are ready to fund. Do you know if your donors are compelled enough by your project(s) to contribute over and above their regular giving? Do they think your project(s) will advance your mission? Are they inspired enough to make your church or organization one of their philanthropic priorities? These questions need to be asked, or you risk jeopardizing the success of your campaign.

We have seen churches and organizations launch a campaign “blind”, aimlessly stumble along, and wonder what they did wrong. For instance, you do not want to be in the position of building or renovating a facility you can’t afford and have to service a debt instead of expanding programming. You also do not want to alienate donors who feel that what they gave wasn’t enough because the campaign never reached its goal.

A well planned campaign will:

  • Raise more money
  • Reach the goal faster
  • Increase your annual funding
  • Increase planned gifts
  • Provide long-term, sustainable support
  • Avoid a campaign that fails

Real campaign planning goes far beyond setting a goal amount and building a prospect list. And it begins long before the first “asks” are made.
