Every summer, churches across the country experience what is commonly known as the “summer slump”…routines shift, attendance in the pews can take a noticeable dip. But while the building may be less full, support for the ministry remains the same.

So how can you maintain more consistent giving during these quieter months?

  1. Communicate Early and Often

Let your congregation know now that the summer months typically impact giving. Transparency fosters trust. A warm reminder in the weekly email blast or newsletter, the bulletin (or on the sanctuary screen), and a note during announcements can keep generosity top of mind.

  1. Encourage Recurring Giving

Emphasize setting up automated giving online or through the bank. This simple step allows individuals to support the church consistently, even if they are out of town. People want to give but simply forget when they are out of their normal rhythm – automation bridges the gap.

From text-to-give options to QR codes in bulletins or posted on offering cards in the sanctuary or the church gathering space, can make it easy for people to give. Highlight these methods regularly.

If you live stream your worship, provide a way of giving for viewing worshippers.

  1. Celebrate Impact

Individuals contribute to a vision, not merely to financial plans. Share stories, photos, or brief testimonies to show how their generosity is making a difference…even throughout the summer. Pictures of Vacation Bible School, mission projects, local projects meeting needs all inspire commitment.

Summer may shift routines, but with intentionality, communication, and a little creativity, the church can weather the slump – and even grow in generosity. After all, giving isn’t about attendance, it’s about the heart. And when hearts stay engaged, giving does too.
