Fred Rogers is quoted as saying… “I believe that appreciation is a holy thing – that when we look for what’s best in a person we happen to be with at the moment, we’re doing what God does all the time. So in loving and appreciating our neighbor, we’re participating in something sacred.”
During this time of social distancing, I have truly come to appreciate the many phone calls, virtual meetings, and “six feet apart” out-door conversations. Each encounter, whether it lasts an hour or a minute is, as Fred Roger’s said, something sacred. Each encounter is a wonderful opportunity for appreciation. An opportunity to meet people where they are. To presume the good in them and hope that they will presume the good in you. To have a conversation. To open your mind and heart as you prepare to learn something from them. To be in each other’s presence, if only for a little while, trusting that something good will come of it.
William James, an American Psychologist, said… “The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” Now, more than ever, we can help satisfy that craving in each other.
Be safe from the virus everyone… and in the meantime may you lift others, and in return may you be lifted, in the sacred exchange of appreciation for one another.
